Hello and welcome to my portfolio page. I will use this page to showcase the work I have done and the learning I have achieved during English 1C/2C.

First, I want to list some learning goals that I set for myself and then explain how I met these learning goals:

  • List at least 5 learning goals that you set for yourself during the Summer and explain how you met each goal.

  • 1. In the begining my major goal was to keep an A+ for the first week.
  • Then I ended up with a B and I realized I needed to do better on quizzes so I have been studying harder.
  • 2. My other goal is to turn in everything on time and complete.
  • I did so I 'm maintaining a good grade.
  • 3. Another goal was to come in on time in the begining and at brake.
  • I did and I have no tardys and absents.
  • 4. One of my goals was to not get stressed with all the work and take time to relax.
  • It makes everything harder if I don't take a second to relax.
  • 5. My last goal is to make sure that all my work is good enough to turn in.
  • So far I believe everything was great.

Next, I want to explain how one of our reading strategies works. Below I will explain how to Chart a Text. Then, I will give an example of how I charted a non-fiction text.

How to Chart a Text: First you chose an article then you make a box with three sections. The first section is for what the author says, the second is for the paragraph you found the quote in. The last box has what the author is doing in this paragraph. This helps the reader fully understand what the article is saying and what the author is trying to argue.

My Example from "Horrible Images of Death in Haiti"

What does the author say?
Par.
What does the author do?
Peple find images disturbing that depict
death/human bodies.
1&2
Setting up the article or writing an
introduction to prepare readers.
Reaaders oppose graphic images that do
nothing but expose tragedies of innocent
people.
3&4

the argument of allowing graphic
images to be published.
News proffessionals have a difficult
time determining what is/is not appropriate.
5/6/7
&8
The author is demnstrating a
neutral factor between the agreement.
The news professionals have taken
steps to be more careful in showing
graphic images.
9&10
The author begins to demonstrate
a proponent of being able to publish
graphic images.
People are saying its dangerous for our
kids to be seeing things like dead babies,
editors are saying it's obvious that it's there
so it's not really our fault.
11/12/13
&14
News people are opposing that it's not
there fault. It's basically the people
who buy these things.
People are sad from experience, it makes
it questionable wether to post the picture
or not, the editors do take feeling into account.
15/16/17
&18
It informs the reader that the edito
r does care about peoples feelings.
Graphic images make people feel and
therefore it's a good thing.
19&20

images to be published freely.

Finally, I want to showcase three assignments that I am especially proud of.

In the article, “Teenage social media butterflies may not be such a bad idea”, the author, Melissa Healy, a writer for the Los Angeles Times claims today’s digital kids may not be a disaster (par.1). She claims that parents shouldn’t be mad at there kids for spending to much time socializing with electronics, because it is healthy and they are using it for good use, plus she states that 72% of teens text regularly, and 1/3 of them do it more than one hundred times a day (par.15). This is important because parents are worrying too much about their kids doing bad things or socializing with strangers. When they are actually doing productive, “healthy”” things.

Teacher's notes:
  • In preparation for the BIG portfolio presentation at the end of Session 2, familiarize yourself with the presentation questions in the following Word document: Reflections Presentation 2010.doc
  • When you add examples of your work to this page, be sure to write WHY you are proud of it.
